Please don't support the Daily Mail. Better off - do your own research - Duck Duck Go Search for 'russian team banned from rio olympics'
As with most things in the Daily Mail, if you squint and kinda tilt your head to the side, you can see where they got that headline from... but it ain't really the truth. The truth is that each organization that governs each event - hockey, gymnastics, archery, whatever - is responsible for ensuring the players are playing on their own merits, and without "cheating". Now that it is clear that Russia has a nationalized cheating program that extends to every sport they compete in, each of the governing organizations need to decide if they will allow the Russian players to participate in their sporting events. Including the Olympics. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Do you insta-ban all Russians from your event until they can prove they AREN'T cheating? (And how, exactly, does one prove a negative?) Do you give the Russian players closer scrutiny before and after each event they participate in? (Huge logistical hurdles. There are a LOT of people in the Olympics, and not a lot of medical professionals with impeccable reputations and skill sets.) Do you just go ahead, as you were, and figure everybody is doing it to some extent anyway, and it is just a part of sports at this rarified level? I personally would auto-ban all Russians from this Olympic games. See what other countries get to the podium when one of the top 3 medal-winning countries in the world is knocked out of competition.... this might give a chance to other amazing athletes, who are not backed by corrupt organizations, and are just doing the best they can.
