When I was working the second year of an internship, my division hired on two new female interns. Both were attending rather prestigious universities and studying for STEM degrees. They left the intern cubicles where we all worked together and went on a coffee run, and were stopped by a long-time employee in the hallway. He asked what they were doing around those parts, as young females are exceedingly rare to see around. When they told him they were both working over the summer in an internship, he said "Huh, I didn't know secretaries had internships!". They politely corrected him, and then came and told me what happened. I facepalmed hard, and profusely apologized behalf of the dude.

It's largely a generational thing, at least in my experience. Don't get me wrong, there's still more than enough of a "boys' club" vibe in many younger male-dominated workplaces (Silicon Valley, UGH), but I see some progress. Never fast enough though, of course. Hang in there.

Oh my that's cringey, I've only had one encounter like that when a trucker kept asking me where the guy was ( he meant the forklift driver) while I was standing there in a safety vest, and steel toe boots with keys in hand. He just looked stunned and went and smoked while I unloaded everything. I've definitely noticed it being generational as most of the younger men I know find it equally cringey when the old men creep on the 15 year olds at work.
