You're talking about the Lembcke book I suspect. It's a great book (I read it when it was published, so it's been at least 10 years) and he's a famous sociologist, but he starts with a set of premises and argues backwards. I am always amazed when a book finds no conflicting evidence. Even Studs Terkel managed to find some things that didn't fit his own views.
