All I'm gonna say is that opera is best watched, not listened to, and that your impressions are likely to change once you've seen them staged. I'd never listen to opera, but watching them is something else.
I think listening to opera has some place. I mean I would have loved to witness Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma, but that isn't possible anymore. Not to say I haven't been making strides to actually attend formal events, but I think being able to listen to a number of renditions is a good thing especially by people that may no longer be alive.
