I haven't posted in a while because I've been travelling/working for a while, but I'm here now and I'd love some honest critique of this drawing. I've been experimenting with colour a lot because I really only drew in black and white for most of my life. This is a mix of coloured pencils and felt tip pens, I'm quite happy with how it turned out, especially the perspective. I was going for a neuromancer/cyberpunk style with neon colours. Let me know what you think!
Fuck yeah. It's awesome. It's my favorite one of yours yet. One small bit of non-technical advice though? When you're depicting city streets, you want them to look like they're lived in. Show it with a bit of grime here, a puddle there, and maybe a bit of litter. Small little details like that can really add a lot to the image.
Thanks! There's a lot more variation in the street colour than the picture shows, but I should have added some trash/flaming barrels for that cyberpunk noir vibe :)
It's actually quite small, ( I drew it in a notebook, smaller than a5) so I don't think it would work great in a frame unfortunately. Still thanks for the compliment!
I really like this one! It's reminds me of a more colorful Blade Runner...without the rain. I actually don't entirely know why my brain went to Blade Runner. Maybe the Asian lettering combined with the seemingly lonely state of all the inhabitants?
I definitely had a cyberpunk vibe when drawing it, I was thinking Neuromancer by William Gibson. Don't look too deep into the Asian letter though, its more "the spirit of Asian lettering" than anything specific.
aside: What does imgur do to process the images that makes the colours smoosh?
I thought maybe it was the camera/lighting that did that, anywhere you'd reccomending for uncompressed photos?
the SFWPorn network has a list. Flickr's nice but it blows anonymity. Google isn't much better than Imgur.
Nice work. The rich colors of the signs definitely give a nighttime-chiba city vibe, but there's a couple of things working against you. One is that the lightest value in the image is the pavement of the, which would indicate daytime, despite the bright colors of the lights and the cast shadows. Those shadows seem to indicate that the brightest light is coming from the stores on the right. This brings me to the second 'thing': your darkest solids are the ceilings and overhangs of the shops on the right. If those shops are producing all the light, then the ceiling of the first store should be reflecting a bunch of it. If it were one of the brighter parts of the drawing, I bet you'd get a much stronger 'nighttime' read. But these are small quibbles great job on the perspective, and in placing figures believably in it-- that's very difficult to do. One last thing: please consider leaving a blank margin around the edge of your drawings and paintings. It will make them tons easier to mat, frame and scan. For the same reason I suggest placing your signature slightly higher, so that it wouldn't get cut off in those same situations. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the input! Still learning image composition, I have to actually start planning ahead of what I colour because I still haven't grasped it entirely.
Very nice perspective! Lovin' the colors as well, but would love to see it a bit more contrasting. Dark, grimy streets and gloomy (maybe a slight haze/fog?) in stark contrast to your wonderfully bright and glowing neon. I honestly haven't worked with pens/pencils in ages though, so super kudos! Do you like/have you ever tried oil pastels? I think you might enjoy playing with those a bit and have fun layering, smoothing and blending. The only "negative" (and don't think of it as that way, please) critique I could give is the focal character... Not sure if it's the perspective, proportions or the circumference of each arm being different.. but it seems a little off. It blends well with the other characters in the background to not be too jarring... but the more I stare at it (which, it is a main focal point ;d) the less I'm able to pin down what feels slightly awkward about it. Overall, however - love it :D Keep up this wonderful work! I look forward to seeing more. -Hats
Thanks for the feedback hats! I'm still figuring out perspective and figure drawing so the dimensions are a little wonky at times (his right foot will haint my dreams forever) I haven't used oil pastels but I'll pick up a set and give them a go. Playing around with acrylic paint at the moment, I hope to put up something soon.
Hope you don't mind, but... I played around with it a bit. Unfortunately couldn't get your sig fully (it's cut off in the org a bit) nor perfectly straight and cropped... But, that's my failing. After doing a lot of zooming and such, I've come to appreciate your attention to detail a lot! Again, keep it up~ (it'll be posted here and only here but will happily remove it if asked!)
That looks awesome! By all means feel free to remix and edit what I post. No title for it yet, not sure what to call it, but I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks! That's a huge compliment and definitely goes towards quashing the impostor syndrome :)
