Honestly, by now, I'm mostly hoping for a Mesh network - pretty much a wireless hardware Tor network, where individual devices are part of, and extend the network. Combine that with either satellites, some form of long-distance wireless communication (mayhaps a return to long-wave radio as a means of data transfer) and you've got an open, transparent, and hard-to-stop network. It's a pipe dream, I know - but as long as a few companies have control over the network, shit will go badly.
I saw somewhere that NYC has the beginnings of a Mesh network.
The government of the area will always be the worst offender. But don't take my word for it...just watch. And don't forget all the recent programs for various P2P networks.
Of course it is - but decentralize something enough and we might just have a chance. And P2P is pointless when your only access point is a single cable. That theoretical Mesh would be able to pick up any other device around it if one node is shut down.
