Dunno whether 'got away with it' is the right phrase, but anyway my personal default is to blame the media and only the media. If there were no media, I would not be physically aware that Donald Trump existed.
Trump was widely acknowledged as an unapologetic boor. His performance at the debates confirmed that he is a completely unapologetic boor. And, as his unapologetic boorishness earns him airtime, he will continue to be an unapologetic boor. It won't be until the media embargoes his ass, a la Paris Hilton, that we will be free of him.
