Ooh, you're using EFI, that's why.

EFI is effectively a Microsoft conspiracy to make it harder to install third-party OSes.

Also - I haven't used gnome since gnome3 went icky, but for KDE there is a control-panel thing called "system settings", and it's distro-independent.

Gnome has a system settings panel, too. It just is way too limited and superficial for my taste. Suse's Yast does some pretty cool things, really.

I'll give KDE in its latest incarnation a go, though. Should not be a problem to just install it alongside Gnome. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Mixing KDE and GNOME is actually very well supported, it's just a dropdown menu in the login screen.

Of course, you do have to choose between kdm and gdm for the login screen itself.
