I hope he gets his punishment - and by the looks of it, he will. The Cincinnati Police Department is really careful about these kinds of situations, because in 2001, a similar incident occurred and there were riots. Since then, they CPD has been doing a lot to lessen the divide between police and citizens. A good sign in this case is that he's being tried for murder, which is the highest sentence they could try him for without him planning it (IIRC). The video really shows what actually happened, and hopefully that will be enough for the officer to land in prison.
My favourite part was this bit: Let me elaborate for him. Mhm.Mr. Deters said Officer Tensing “should never have been a police officer,” but he declined to elaborate.
Mr. Deters said that the university police force should be disbanded because policing is not what a university knows how to do, and that the campus should be patrolled by the Cincinnati Police Department.
The UCPD isn't run by the University, it's just a police force whose jurisdiction is the UC Campus and the surrounding area. They have real police authority and training ; they're not rent-a-cops. They're there to handle the minor things that go on on campus, like minors drinking and noise complaints. They can give real tickets out, or university tickets that don't go on your record, so they don't mess up someone's life over something stupid (Kind of like a warning, but still a ticket to make sure people don't do it). With that being said, if they're unable to operate correctly, then they should definitely be reformed or replaced.
