I almost feel like Carmac McCarthy wrote this. The themes of masculinity when faced with a harsh natural enemy and how the characters deal with the culture shock. I was surprised to learn about AZT and being unfamiliar with AIDS medications, I thought the drug was still widely used. When I was younger I was under the impression that AZT was pretty much your only hope for survival. I do know enough that when Ron has sex with the random girl he runs the risk of being reinfected. It still amazes me how much fear and ignorance surrounded the plague in the 80s and as a consequence how miraculous it didn't spread deeper into the population. A very affecting film with powerful performances.
