True crime has become a favorite genre of mine of all media. I listen to podcasts more than I listen to anything else and I am particular about which ones I listen to. I cannot sit through podcasts who's sound isn't good or who's content is boring or they just chat a lot before getting into the information of the podcast, so these things have weeded a lot of podcasts out for me.
The list below is my list of favorite true crime podcast that I listen to regularly. If you like the genre of true crime, I hope that some of these suggestions are helpful for you if you haven't already tried some of these podcasts.
1. Serial - This one goes without saying. I loved Serial and honestly still listen to it and obsess over the details of the case. The style is great, the production is great, and the content is intriguing.
2. Criminal - When I needed a Serial fix when season 1 ended, this podcast filled the void. Criminal episodes are anywhere from like 11 to 18 minute segments about different crimes. What's really interesting about this podcast is that they will talk to someone who the crime affected, the criminals themselves, or someone who's studied or looked into the crime. So you get different perspectives of a bunch of different stories. Plus, the production is great and it's got an almost Serial feel.
3. Sword and Scale - This podcast takes a different approach from the two above. They handle some pretty deep issues that involve crime and they dig deep into these issues. Some examples to help explain are episode 2, which is an entire 1 hour and 8 minute episode about psychopaths. They explore what makes a psychopath a psychopath with a lot of good questions answered by an expert in the field of psychopathy. They then go on to play clips of psychopaths who've committed crimes while they explain the crimes and how they did them. This podcast is deep and can be disturbing and their execution of it is fantastic in my opinion.
4. Breakdown - Now I'll admit, I don't know how much I like this one yet because I just started it. This podcast was started by Atlanta Journal-Constitution and, to be honest, seems to me from the first episode to be somewhat of a Serial knockoff. Now that's not a bad thing at all. I could use a slightly Serial take on another case so I'll stop obsessing over that one case. I will continue to listen to Breakdown through the episodes that are available so far because it seems interesting enough. Plus, the quality is good and the content is interesting.
I hope that you guys take some of these suggestions if you're fans of true crime. Let me know if you have any other suggestions for good true crime podcasts.
