I watched the movie. I am not sure what to think about it. It left me disoriented and confused. This movie talk about life. Don is living a boring life, I suppose he is depressed. The letter is the thing that bring him to discover himself through the past. Don goes to all his past lovers and everytime there is that glimpse of a man that had everything but at the same time he had nothing. Maybe the movie is trying to say that without love a man is nothing and with failure Don started to feel something.

You're on to something here. To me the brilliance of the narrative and theme of this is how it's really all right there but it obscured much in the same way that Don Johnstons journey becomes obscured over the course of the film. To me Broken Flowers is saying that life is a pointless endeavor and because of that we do not have the answers we seek and we attempt to fill our lives with pleasure. We're watching the result of a life without any sort of genuine meaning and an attempt to correct that situation far too late, and I think Jarmusch is trying to say a genuine relationship and long-lasting meaning is what we should be looking for.

And it's what Don Johnston spends the entire movie looking for and still doesn't find it after all of those years.
