Remember the old bob Dylan quote, "to live outside the law you must be honest?" Tsipras has to avoid creating a giant credibility problem for himself. If he rubs Europe the wrong way, but everyone believes that he's a man of his word, they can progress. As soon as he starts bullshitting and reneging, he's done. If, indeed, he assured lagarde of payment, only to back out a few hours later, that's going to be a problem for him. If people don't believe you're negotiating in good faith, they won't negotiate with you in good faith either, if at all.
