I agree. But I think he was making the argument that with the text as an alternative, the intrusion is now that much less necessary.

It's an interesting argument up until he says calling people with your phone is rude then it goes a bit too far

Yes. In all honesty I don't think it actually holds up in a historical sense. Before the phone, you had to show up on someone's doorstep. The phone was probably seen as a less intrusive option.

I believe that with the advent of answering machines, and Caller ID in the late 90s, the need to interrupt your day and rush to the bell ceased. After all, you could know who was calling with a little waiting with the tape, and immediately with ID, and could decide whether or not it's worth picking up.

True. But I think there was at least one generation that never saw it that way. My folks never let it go to a message.

That's true, and a sad thing if you ask me. Personally, I never let it go to message, but that's because I know if someone calls me, they need to get a hold of me immediately.
