ghostoffuffle  ·  3257 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Are Hubski's best days ahead of it or behind it?

Two days away from living in our own place again, ten-ish days from having a computer again. At which point I might have some stuff to send you and kleinbl00 after a long silence. [edited to remove KB shoutout out of respect for his posted request from a few days ago... guess that's one thing I missed right off the bat.]

Has humanodon dropped off the grid? Who else? For that matter, care to give a quick breakdown of what I've missed in the past few months?

On that note, don't think I'm qualified to weigh in on subject at hand since I haven't seen much site content/interaction for a while. But I see a lot of familiar handles in this post, so the site can't be going down that quickly.

Hey dude, tell me what's new in your world when you have a chance.

We moved to Louisville, KY. Which so far is a much better situation than Seattle, except:

-We spent our entire savings on a house. Which is great, except:

-The movers really fucked up and they still haven't delivered our stuff, leaving us living in an empty house- no kitchen stuff, no table, computer, instruments, beds, etc. So we bought a couple basics. Which is great, except:

-We now can't afford actual furniture we wanted since we spent it on stuff we needed. And we're living off of my wife's nursing income, now greatly curtailed thanks to East/West coast pay disparities. On the other hand, I'm getting it together to go back to school myself with the intention of being a psych nurse within two years. Which is great, except:

-Turns out I have a year of prerecs to get out of the way since I religiously avoided the hard sciences since midway through high school, which was, what, thirteen years ago now? And then it turns out that to get into nursing school, I have to take an entrance exam requiring knowledge in: physics, microbiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, chemistry, and English (should be okay in that last one). Just to get in. What do they plan on teaching me once I'm there?

To whit: the next two to three years are gonna be tough. It's a little overwhelming.

How's grad school stuff? And you might've said already, but what are you in for?

Miss the hubski crew. Plan on getting back into things as soon as my fucking. Computer. Comes. Definitely owe TNG some solid work.

Reminds me- no reason to think that Maphen still hangs around the site, but he seemed like a good dude for the time he was around. On the off chance that you get the shoutout- we're new in town, looking to learn the lay of the land. Feel like meeting up, gimme a shout. Actually, that goes for anyone in the area, visiting or otherwise.

Whoa, it's been a long long time since I was here, ha! After having a kid I kind of curtailed a lot of online time, and even worse my work's online restrictions got a LOT tighter.

But hey, we could definitely use some company! When you have a kid at our age, friends don't come easy. My wife grew up in Louisville so she knows her way pretty well, and I've picked up a fair bit these last 4 years. Send me an email at ssigritz@gmail.com and we can figure something out! And don't worry, finances aren't amazing for us either, so it'll never really be extravagant!

That's rough with the moving company, hope you're getting some sort of comp out of that or at least a bad review to try and convince people not to use them.

You're going into nursing school? In Kentucky? That seems like a hard shift from what you were doing in the northwest? Either way, it seems like you're ready for whatever's next, stop by Pubski sometime!

ghostoffuffle  ·  3232 days ago  ·  link  ·

Moving thing got worse before it got better. Don't want to bore with details, but long story short, yes, we got a comp, but then had to apply it directly to an insane shuttle fee. And then I had to threaten them with shitty yelp reviews and small claims court. Bad news all over the place. If you ever move your shit across country... actually, just don't. Burn it in a big goodbye bonfire and start your life anew (aside: one upside to living without any of your shit for two months is that it's a great reminder of how little you actually need).

Nursing school in Kentucky. I know, man. Re. Kentucky- been looking for a smaller town for a while, and my wife wanted to be closer to family, and I insisted that anywhere we move feel vaguely West Coastish. Kentucky as a whole is obviously pretty red, but Louisville is its own little progressive enclave. I mean, all my neighbors have asked me where we're going to church, so we're not talking fuckin' Amsterdam here. But it's still a really cool town, and I think it's going to get even better in the next couple decades. Also, this is beautiful country. And you can get good bourbon for like $25 a bottle.

Re. nursing school- kids. They have a way of forcing you to grow up. Can't really afford to just play music and hustle around radio stations anymore. Need to find something that pays decent, offers benefits and that I'm at least mildly interested in. That's not how I'll phrase it on my school app.

When are you making the move to Washington? That still in the works?

ButterflyEffect  ·  3230 days ago  ·  link  ·

That's cool, I never would have guessed that Louisville is a progressive place, but I don't know much about Kentucky in general. I'm glad you've found a place that seems to fit what you're looking for and $25 bourbon sounds amazing. What, are you trying to say that radio stations don't pay all the bills? That's crazy talk.

I'm moving to Washington in ~3.5 weeks, just got approved for an apartment in Tacoma three days ago so things are finally moving forward with this. More or less decided that weeknights will be spent in Tacoma and Olympia, and weekends in Seattle.

Dang, that's a full plate . . . I wish you guys the best. I'm about to move to another neighborhood and that has me kind of nervous. Still, sometimes starting a new life somewhere totally new can bring all kinds of good things.

I'm going to school for conflict resolution (which is a misnomer, because it's really more about using conflict as an opportunity for productive outcomes than making sure everyone can hug or whatever). I turned down the spot I was offered at a really great school with a great reputation in favor of a school that everyone in the know in the conflict world seems to swear by. Still, I can't help but wonder what kind of opportunities I'm passing up . . .

Why Kentucky? I've just never met anyone who planned to move there, is all.

ghostoffuffle  ·  3232 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm glad you're following through re. conflict resolution. I remember when you were going through the Foreign Service rigamorole. Seemed like a pretty obvious fit. If the place you're going is recommended by those in the know, that's gotta count. I bet it's fascinating, yeah?

Kind of answered the KY thing in response to BFX. Really we were choosing Louisville rather than Kentucky. It's its own little thing. Lots of good restaurants, easy to get from here to there, place is lousy with great parks. Drive thirty minutes and you're in some beautiful boonies. City shuts down for the Kentucky derby, and best as I can tell the day before and after, and everybody just gets shitty drunk.

It's pretty fun so far. But yeah, Nobody in their right mind would plan to move to Kentucky.

humanodon  ·  3231 days ago  ·  link  ·

Nice man, very cool. Hey, the fact that you'd like to go into nursing reminded me that one of the teachers that I most respect, is not only a conflict specialist, but also an RN and a lawyer. If you feel like she'd be someone who you'd like to talk to, let me know.

swedishbadgergirl hasn't posted in a while.

If you see this, how is that bone thingy?

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3176 days ago  ·  link  ·

It is much better. I probably have EDS (ehler-danlos syndrome) although I am formally diagnosed with JHS (joint hypermobility syndrome) I can't stand/walk for long periods of time but otherwise it's good.

I missed a ton of school since I was tired a lot and my doctor advised me to get back into the swing of things slowly so I'll have to re-do a year but that is fine.

caelum19  ·  3173 days ago  ·  link  ·

Good to know. 'ehler-danlos syndrome' and JHS are a lot more precise than 'bone thingy' haha.

What did you end up doing in your down time?

humanodon  ·  3256 days ago  ·  link  ·

Not off the grid, it's just that I haven't made much time to read, what with returning to the grind and figuring out grad school stuff. Congrats on the new place!

thenewgreen  ·  3257 days ago  ·  link  ·

let me get to this tonight. But congrats!!!

Lots to report on.
