At Community Service Help, www.communityservicehelp.com, the brainchild of Adam Young, criminals sentenced to community service get credit for taking classes like algebra and English instead of picking up trash.

I absolutely applaud this type of thinking, its great. I agree with mk that picking up trash is degrading and does nothing to help rehabilitate. GoatFood's idea of learning a trade is a good one too. I think it would be worth while having criminals that are to be incarcerated take a aptitude test and if they have unrefined skills, we should help them refine them.
I love this idea. Not only is this educating, but consider the fact that this is something that can help build a feeling of worth. Picking up trash might help the community, but doing it as punishment can feel degrading. I suppose it is punitive, but it isn't forward-thinking.
As long as there is some reasonable validation, this is a good direction.

I agree, this is a tremendous idea. It would be even better if they could earn a degree or license through this program. What if instead of receiving a court order to learn algebra, criminals had to study some kind of trade? This would give them a way to enter the formal economy, providing stability in their lives and eliminating the need to earn money through crime.
