Of course they can, but it won't happen without alienating a large portion of their current userbase.

People want the service that Reddit provides. However, you cannot provide such a service to an unlimited extent upon principle alone. To some degree, you own it. When you host a forum for pictures of dead children, you are part of the reason that forum exists. The reason might well be defensible, but that requires an understanding and context that does not exist in mainstream conversation and media.

IMHO the $50M of funding that Reddit recently raised will decide this issue.
