Is Stephen Hawking, another Brit, not a household name? One of the more famous American physicists in recent decades, Carl Sagan, had a major Hollywood blockbuster based on his book dedicated to him. Even though he's a trained engineer, Bill Nye also probably inspired a generation of scientists.

It seems that scientists have only been failing at the public relations fight for the last decade or so.

I agree that there have been others that have been household names. What we need is someone that can transcend even this, Einstein was lauded as a Hero even amongst the non-science community.
