I think I know what you mean. I'm just about finished Anna Karenina and I'm constantly rereading sections where he just sublimely describes universal human behavior and motivation. I really like it. Is that what you were referring to, his subtlety?

Yes, absolutely. IMO that's the genius of his writing.

The actions of his works are like movements of an orchestra, and you listen to them build in the minds of his characters.
