Hubski Meet-Up: D.C. Edition
Currently I travel up and down a small bit of the Eastern Seaboard (I think) for work, on Mondays and Fridays. As many of you know, I use Snapchat frequently. Last week as I was on the train I realized that I passed through DC, around which Meriadoc and wasoxygen are situated, and I sent them a picture as I was passing through. Meriadoc responded and told me I should hang out! We then realized that since I passed through weekly it would be a great opportunity to meet up and hang out one of these Fridays as a mini hubski meet-up, and that's what inspired the thread you see here.
Meriadoc and I met up at Penn Station Friday afternoon. I had reached out to a high school friend who also lives in DC, who had suggested we get dinner at Ted's Bulletin (the one at 14th and T street. or S street), so M and I headed over. M very bravely drove from Penn station, taking us near Ted's, at which point we parked and walked. M pointed out his local "third place," a bar/restaurant. (If any of you ever come where I live - highly unlike except actually @redsoxx3434@, I will show you my much-mythologized third place.) We would revisit it later.
As we walked to Ted's we talked about things like our jobs and our futures, sexism, and tattoos. The people-watching was excellent. I always was busy snapchatting wasoxygen and trying to wrangle him into meeting up with us - there was some confusion at first as to our location. In fact, wasox snapped us a picture of the front of Ted's - and then kept walking!
My non-Hubski friend had snagged us a table so we arrived and went in. Here is a picture of Meriadoc and the space where wasox was supposed to be. Wait imgur upload isn't working for me right now. I'll add the pictures as they upload. Also I know Meriadoc was taking pictures let's get some of those! We got boozy milkshakes and food. Then, the process of attempting to convert my high school friend began. We are pretty sure we piqued her interest at least, as we tried to explain the eternal questions: what is Hubski, how whenever we try to explain what Hubski is Reddit inevitably comes up and we wish that didn't happen, who are these other people we're talking about, whether or not it's reasonable to think "internet friends" are weird and whether choosing to admit/call them "internet friends" is a matter of not caring, perverse enjoyment at other people's potential weird reaction (me), or something else. Social lives in the internet age. As this conversation unfolded we located wasox and drew him into the discussion. My non-Hubski friend promised to check it out.
My dating habits (almost inevitably, it seems) and Dan Ariely's book Predictable Irrationality came up. This became a somewhat recurrent subject. wasox told me now that I'd read it I needed to read Thinking, Fast and Slow. I should have a review up for Ariely this weekend. Anyway we had interesting talks about some of the subjects in the book, like whether free money is free.
We finished dinner (our waitress had purple hair, by the way) and my non-Hubski friend departed. I noticed with amusement at this point that we spent quite a lot of time on our smartphones during the above interlude. We even showed my friend Hubski in different styles and discussed Zen mode.
We left and went to Meriadoc's third place, discussing Hubski all the way. I guess we are all passionate about Hubski and kind of nerdily enthused about it. We wished that we had stickers. thenewgreen , can we get some stickers?
When we arrived at the bar, Meriadoc really did know everybody! And they knew him. He had told us before about the chef, who had worked with a winner of Top Chef and also been Cal Ripkin's personal chef! We weren't hungry, sadly, so we agreed on one more drink before we all had to depart. Productivity apps and approaches came up when wasox saw me mark off a task in my phone. Apparently I follow the Seinfeld method regarding productivity. I don't like to break the chain. wasox believes that trying to do the smallest good thing will help. I quizzed the two about the 10 commandments (thanks, Dan Ariely).
Alas, eventually our evening had to come to a close. Completely neglecting to take a group photo we all dispersed for the evening.
I had a great time though, and I think we're going to hang out again!

1. That's awesome! 2. Of course you can. insomniasexx just ordered some new ones, we can get some to you when they arrive.
Technically there are tons of Penn Stations because the name is derived from the original Pennsylvania Railroad.
