Personally I have little appreciation for art, so it baffles me that people would pay such exorbitant sums of money for such pieces; the comment about auctiongoers "applauding money" is rather telling.

I am also reminded of the recent discovery that some painting was found to actually have been the work of some famous painter, and its price instantly increased by orders of magnitude; the painting, meanwhile, remained unchanged.

And then there's the usual sickening fact that there are such wealthy people in the world while others starve...

But look at me pissing on the parade; it was interesting.

I do appreciate art but I am also baffled by the huge sums of money paid. That kind of money for a single object that doesn't fly you in to outer space is crazy.

I tend to agree, just look at how much money went into paying for commercials at the Superbowl, think of the communities in the developing world that could have access to fresh running water for that kind of money. You should check out the documentary "Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?", it's about a woman that buys a painting for $5 at a garage sale, only to find out that it might be an original Jackson Polluck. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487092/
