I was into punk via Linkin Park early on in developing my taste in music, that's awesome.

Imo, there's a few universal answers to your question, i'll mix them in with my personal favorites:

Lou Reed:

Ja' son, mon:

Bobby McLovin':

Miles Davis:

Carlos Santana:

But most of all I enjoy a good music video:

Radiohead-

These are all the songs I've gotten high to, anyway. woops. not including Floyd, the rest of radiohead and Zeppelin, which make me thoughtful, not happy.

Given that you've posted McLaughlin and Santana, I'm assuming you're familiar with Love, Devotion, Surrender? It's a beautiful album. Here is their rendition of Coltrane's "Naima", for the uninitiated.

Coltrane's "Giant Steps" record was one of the first I ever played through and appreciated, as my parents would always play it at home and in the car. Two years ago I mentioned it to a professor at my music school and he gave me this album along with the Mahavishnu album I posted. Bliss, thank you for reminding me of this.
