Ha! Look at the countries that carry firearms at a similar rate to us.
Wow. I'm always so surprised at these to realize how much my values are unaligned with the majority of my country. I realize that it's mostly because of places that are very much not a part of my lifestyle and how large the country truly is, but it really gives things perspective to just how separate parts of the country are from each other.

I think its just a sort of 'rational' outlook, implying not that they have distrust for their family members, but they will not trust them all blindly, as you really shouldn't with anyone otherwise.
