As someone that enjoys his work, I'm curious what you dislike about it? IMO, Wes Anderson has a rare ability to create a completely new world without introducing anything "other worldly", I really admire this.

Wes Anderson celebrates personality traits that I would cheerfully see extinguished, and champions protagonists that I would gladly see hit with a truck. There is not a character in any given Wes Anderson film that couldn't be beaten up, pantsed, and had their significant other stolen by any character in any given Woody Allen film... and that's saying a lot.
I hate Neil LaBute films because they celebrate cruelty. I hate Wes Anderson films because they celebrate mediocrity.

Wes Anderson does have a knack for writing milquetoast men. And his female leads are the stronger of the species. But for me, the frailty is reassuring. As if it reduces the characters to pure childlike emotion. I watch all different types film for all different types of reasons and it's at least comforting to know what you're getting into with his work. Above all this though is that they're basically just fun. I like the portrait-like camera stills and the dialogue is funny - "Don't listen to me. I'm on mescaline. "I'm sorry, did you say you were on mescaline?" I did indeed!"

Where you see him "celebrating mediocrity", I see him finding beauty in idiosyncrasies. But, I can see your points. I have a friend that refers to this era of Bill Murrays career as his "broken man" phase: Rushmore, Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers etc. But still, some great performances.
Love me some Bill Murray, David Bowie and some slow motion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr5NvoQ6CjA

Altered States is great. What brass balls on that guy. I would NEVER get into that tank. Funny, this just made me think of the video game Altered Beast: http://members.shaw.ca/tom.t/ab/ab-trans.gif
That takes me back :)
