If this were a movie it would be a small part of the narrative, because it's in a game everyone will go bonkers on it. Wouldn't it be a great world if we could sanitize anything that was offensive to anyone? Game shock stories sell toothpaste, people over 40 who don't get video games will get the impression that Old Republic is a game about torturing slaves.
If players have freedom some of them will do some screwed up shit, but really this is a non-story.
Personally, I don't think this is a very big deal. But, game makers need to think about this stuff. People don't look at games like they do TV shows or movies.

My buddy and I made a tabletop fantasy RPG. He designed the world that goes with it, which is a dark medieval setting. In his world, there is a city with a slavers guild. When ordering some art, he asked for an illustration of some slavers. The illustration he got looked like it was intended for Roots. We opted not to use it. Be very specific when you are commissioning artwork.</tangent>

"We're all of different classes here in this Old Republic. We didn't mean any harm, didn't mean to shock her, to discriminate against her, but that's how she took it." -Manager of Papa Johns on Tatooine.
