Assuming RTÜK is not interfering, the best source of news is probably Twitter: https://twitter.com/search?q=occupygezi Looks like things have been calm since Saturday night. Turkey's economy is doing pretty well for a restive eastern European country; most people do have jobs to go to, so the big displays happen evenings and weekends.
No, this is from 2011, before all that stuff started. Just a normal labor day demonstration, a lot of communist and anarchist groups I think--couple of arrests happened at the end. I didn't take any photos during the student protests, I really didn't feel like getting pepper sprayed or corralled. Still somehow ended up in the midst of them on a number of occasions sans camera (peaceful ones thankfully).
I've been to one, and honestly most of them were peaceful. Can't be that dangerous if Pauline Marois takes part in them, hitting a pan, can't it? It's always a couple idiots looking for reasons to get into fights that tarnish the reputation of the whole movement. But anyways, i'm glad the protests are over.
Sadly, I'll only be going as far as midway down the Gulf coast. My mother has a condo in Venice, which is a sleepy town that wouldn't have anything to offer if not for a fabulous, not so crowded, beach. Still, it's nice to break up the winter with a three day golfing respite. It's -16ºC today with -27ºC wind chill (you're welcome for the units) here in Detroit. Even for a lover of winter such as myself, the freezing wind gets a bit old after a while.
