I was a member of the Mars Society for some time, and still recieve their newsletter. If you haven't read Zubrin's: The Case for Mars: The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Why We Must, you should.
I strongly believe that a goal like human Mars exploration would be good for the world as a whole. The only thing we lack are leaders with that vision, and the conviction to realize it.
I like the risk analysis -- why spend millions on tests to marginally improve the safety of handful of volunteers when the money could be spend to save tens of thousands of live through vaccines or other measures?

I thought about that too. But I don't think that they would have trouble finding volunteers. Robert Zubrin is great. We need more Robert Zubrins. I'm so glad to see this in the Wall Street Journal!
