It's a perspective thing when the algorithms you write out-grow you. Humans (and especially programmers) want to control and predict the things they build. When you don't understand it, weird shit can happen

I'm not sure I'd characterize the Flash Crash as "weird shit." It was pretty much the hypothetical people raised against HFT.

Don't know a lot about HFT, to be honest. Do you mean the specific mechanism of the crash? Or the abstract concept of computer traders acting without human involvement?

Yes - the specific mechanism of the crash was "a bunch of computers operating on non-vetted rules competing for fractions of a penny millions of times per second WHAT COULD GO WRONG?"

It wasn't exactly unprecedented, either. Before there was HFT, there was "program trading" which probably caused Black Monday.
