there might just be a way you can sculpt the fuzz to remove some of it from the low end (that's the real problem). even if there was a way to not apply the fuzz to everything below 50-70 Hertz or something. I mean, if you actually want to do something about it. You might like it as it is.
Well, that's what I get for trying to be all technical and shit ;). Seriously, go with your gut and have fun with music. I'm in grad school for classical music and I love talking with other passionate musicians.
Okay, to be fair, my last statement was a lie. There's a clean generated sine wave tone at one point around the 46 hz region. But all the fuzz is an effect of pushing the higher end stuff through tape with the gain jacked all the way up. So you weren't crazily off base. Awesome that you're in grad school for classical. What subcategory? Specific era? Instrument? What are you thinking of doing with it? Find myself wishing these days that I'd just followed through and focused academically on music.
I play classical double bass, and I'm hoping to get a gig playing in an orchestra and postsecondary teaching. I love playing a lot of solo music, and dig playing chamber and baroque music too. music school's a weird creature. I've seen a lot of talented people give up because they aren't willing to deal with the bullshit involved. It definitely tests your love of the craft by putting a lot of barriers in your way. Some people hate it and quit, some people (like me) survive, and some people thrive in it. I don't know if I'd recommend it to everyone.
I know what you mean about music school being an acquired taste. Almost majored in music in college, but I decided I didn't want to turn music into a chore rather than a passion. Like I said, still don't know if I made the right choice. A friend of mine went to Peabody for a secondary music degree, now he teaches a few college courses and heads up an experimental program. He loves every minute of it. Classical double bass is a BEAST. Good on you for pulling it off!
