You're more optimistic than me. A slight outsider can't even win a party nomination. Remember in 2000 when McCain and Bradley were running and gathering steam? Lots of people were excited about them at the time, and eventually the parties circled their wagons around whom they wanted and we ended up with an election of Bush-Gore, aka the two worst candidates in recent memory. The parties always win, because they write the rules of the game.

Actually, I think this is the year it might happen. Obama has sqaundered his support of the left, and the GOP has Romney, who obviously isn't going to be able to bring a vision of change. The left and right are disatisfied, and that's the narrative. However, no block is currently more disatisfied than the Independents. The Americans Elect candidate will be socially liberal, and fiscally moderate. That's what web voters want on average. As long as this candidate has charisma, he/she is going to become the beneficiary of widespread discontent.

This is not going to be your typical rich guy with some crazy ideas from his favorite book.
