This topic came up here and I thought, "How can that not be a writing prompt."
Sometimes in a writing workshop, the leader asks you to write a noun, a verb, a colour, a place, or whatever and then says to use them in a poem. The goal is to put together unrelated items and see where they take you, to get you out of your usual writing habits, to improvise. So it's Hallowe'en, let's be playful. Start with the dog.
I had a dog who secretly smoked all my cigars, drank all of my liquor and unplugged my fridge _ Well, when I say secret I mean "did it while I was visiting my ailing mother, you douche bag" Which is a kinder version of what I yelled at him when I came home to him
I have no idea what gets into him. lying on the couch
the scent of 3 day old
mouldering pork chops
and spilled Tullamore Dew
There's a blues song there.
So many things rhyme with Tullamore Dew My dog drank all my whiskey
and smoked my cigars too
My dog drank all my whiskey
and smoked my cigars too
I miss you so much baby
I don't know what to do
So I cry here with my puppy
And sip my Tullamore Dew
I had a fox who ate all of my pizza, He was a sly fox and used my visa. I had a cat who took all of my candy, She left the wrappers along the floor all astray, I'm also missing my brandy. I had a bear who would sleep in my bed, The fur he left behind was brown and red. I had an octupus whose 8 arms were filled with cash, I told her that she could earn it by taking out the trash. I had a turtle who took all of my spaghetti, It left the remnants around like confetti. I had a moose who took all of my rice, I really didn't mind because we know all mooses are nice. An alligator once was watching my television, He sat so close it affected his vision. I once caught a raccoon trying to sneak my juice, I talked to him later and found out he was obtuse. I had a dog who secretly smoked my cigars, I found out when I caught him smoking at the bar. I couldn't hold these things against them because I am human, I am part of the animal kingdom.
Owl, thought I should shout-out to you so you can see all of the writing your comment inspired. How does a cigar smoke a dog?
Why do the clouds prefer the fog?
How can a secret remain in your mouth,
When cotton haired ladies wriggle it out?
How does a cigar smoke a dog?
Rolled up in a carpet, on a fire like a log.
Please put these lyrics on your "songs-to-write-someday" list. It would be a wonderful children's song. Perhaps eventually a children's album for Eve and the rest. How does a cigar smoke a dog?
Why do the clouds prefer the fog?
How can a secret remain in your mouth,
When cotton-haired ladies wriggle it out?
How does a cigar smoke a dog?
Rolled up in a carpet, on a fire like a log.
While the cotton-haired ladies and silver head men
Sit by the fire and snog.
This may be the first comment I've "saved" on Hubski.
Yeah, it looked like the beginning of a list poem - a list of things you had or a list of things that got smoked, or a list of secrets. I was thinking the poem might start: I had a dog who secretly smoked all my cigars
but as in all things Hubski, your imagination can be your guide.
Ah ok. When I read this: it reminded me of a thing I do to fool around with imagery sometimes. I read an article a while back that asserted that hearing is the sense of touch at a distance the way that smell is the sense of taste at a distance. It didn't go into the sense of sight though. Anyway, if hearing is to smell as touch is to taste, then you can get images like, "I had a dog who smelled of secrets and had cigar-wrapper skin".The goal is to put together unrelated items and see where they take you, to get you out of your usual writing habits, to improvise.
