how is it possible that, nearly 150 years after Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, in an era in which both the history of the earth and the natural history of human beings are known in considerable detail, religion continues to exert a powerful presence? Laziness, that's how it's possible. Trying to understand the complexity of life is tough and is a lifelong pursuit with a virtual guarantee of never being fulfilled. God is easy.
Really, one need only to read, to travel, to talk, to look around oneself and try to understand the world to question religion. I still think laziness plays a bigger part. And because it's "easier", a canned solution. You get to the answers faster, albeit wrong, with religion than you do with facts. Religion is a sort of "tl;dr" of the world written 2000+ years ago. And comes with an hypocritical morality that served that period, and that period only.
Ha. I like that. I'm definitely going to steal that sometime in the future. But, I don't think its the world around us that leads to so much fear, but rather the unknown world. Specifically, I think that its the fear of death that leads to such bizarre phenomena.
Making your kids wear helmets when doing routine things is also hilarious but in a sad way. And its is borderline emotional abuse, IMO.
