I know only of Beck because of one of their album arts. This sounds promising. Where should I start with listening to Beck?

Start with Cold Brains

Sea Change is one of my favorite albums. When people ask me the question, "what five albums would you bring to the deserted island?" Sea Change is definitely in there. Beck wrote it after his girlfriend broke up with him. It is heartbreaking, beautiful and incredibly sincere, something that Beck is not often accused of being.

MV is incredibly deep musically, but just down right silly lyrically, involving lots of stuff like rapping in verses that seem to have nothing tying them together besides the fact that they rhyme. SC definitely has the strong edge on sincerity.

*his

I would start with Odelay, but that's just one opinion.

EDIT: see? Absolutely no consensus. No one's even mentioned Guero yet.

To me, Midnite Vultures is the greatest thing by him I've heard. It's brilliant top to bottom.

That's my favorite too.

I can't count the number of times I've listened to it straight through. I thinks it's about as perfect an album as I own. I wouldn't really characterize myself as a Beck fan either. I like a lot of his other stuff, but I don't go crazy for it. MV on the other hand is not from this planet.

I love that he's so versatile, but I like it when he's a bit more focused like on Sea Change and MV, so for me those are the two most successful albums. I still follow the guy, but after Sea Change it was largely hit or miss for me, though mostly in the "miss" column as far as albums go.
