I like to try to write songs in weird time signatures that don't sound forced. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This new song, "Back to the Ocean," is in 13/8, and I think it came out okay. My sense of rhythm isn't good enough to pull this off live, so I programmed the entire song, then replaced all the fake instruments with real instruments (accordion, mandolin, ukulele, percussion, vocals) one at a time until it was (almost) synth-free.

"Back to the Ocean"
Oh, to float in the warmth of the bubbling broth
All my days
I shan’t miss the performance of
Disparate organs
Anyways
Anyways
Let’s go back
Back to being
Altogether single
Single-celled creatures
The stuff we’d lack
Has no meaning
Evolution failed
Back to the ocean we go
Back to the ocean we go
Back to the ocean we
Oh, the weight of your ego
That burden you carry it
Shall be lifted as we go
Revert into a eukaryote
A eukaryote
Face mankind’s
Poor prognosis
Love is intermingled
Single-celled creatures
Whose pleasures come
From mitosis
Evolution failed
Back to the ocean we go
Back in the ocean we go
Back to the ocean we
Always knew someday you’d crack
Always knew you’d soon come crawling back
Always knew someday you’d crack
Always knew you’d soon come crawling back
Crawling back
Crawling back
Back to being
Altogether single
Back to the ocean we go
Back in the ocean we go
Back in the ocean we go
Back in the ocean we go
Back in the ocean we go
Thanks for listening. If you are so inclined, here are some other funny-metered tunes that I thought came out pretty good.
