The most severe subsidence NASA identified wasn’t in highly populated areas — Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles will not plunge into the Earth in the immediate future. One notable “subsidence bowl” was centered near Corcoran, Calif., population 24,000. Another was south of El Nido, population 330. But as bridges drift downward to meet water and millions are spent on repairs to infrastructure, it’s not clear, short of massive rainfall, what will allow the state to escape its vicious cycle of drought, excessive pumping and subsidence.
