I'm not sure I agree with this. When I am searching for a place or a specific event, search seems to be working very well. In that case, Google feels like a find engine. It's actually amazing how fast my address bar populates with the correct term.

However, when it comes to information, Google search is pretty awful. In those cases, Wikipedia, DDG and Wolfram Alpha are usually better.

The problem might be that there are different types of search motivations, and those are not always being accurately detected. As far as news and information goes, Google feels like a funnel and not much of a directory of information.
