Take the objects of one realm and use them in a poem on a completely unrelated topic. For example, what are the objects of your daily life? Tools? Instruments? Activities? List these items and use them in a poem about an abstract idea: justice, love, courage.... etc.
I was reading about quantum physics some time ago and watching my baby daughter in her walker.
Creative Survival
How to get from one cup of coffee to the next
one act of love to the next
one revenge to the next
one poem to the next --
is the art of creative survival.
From her walker the baby plays the broom
Every day she tests a larger object
Soon she’ll be sweeping those rocky faces of reality
The horrible wonderful truth I have to tell her
is that soon she’ll be responsible for her own life
and that, ultimately, all she has is herself.
That is the art of creative survival --
To keep the spirit soaring
Between and beyond each sweep of the minute hand across the floor.
(The horrible wonderful truth I want to tell her
is that from one moment to the next
the play of light across the craggy faces of reality
offers both the particles and the waves
to make it to the next cup of coffee.)
I picked up the guitar, from afar I was intrigued.
A discordant strum rang out as haste
as the first embrace of a blossoming love.
