Maggie Walker is well known as the first woman to found and run an American bank. She did much more though in acting as a pioneer in the civil rights movement and as an early advocate for women's rights.
I am a teacher and in researching this article learned that some of Walker's family and members of the Richmond community unsuccessfully petitioned the Post Office for a commemorative stamp in Mrs. Walker's honor.
