Excluding labor costs, it should be clear that the material costs of Solar Roofs are significantly more expensive than any of the standard roof types, with the exception of niche roofs, such as high-end tile and slate roofs. However, these expensive tile types likely constitute to less than 5% of the overall market.

Unless Tesla restricts the definition of Solar Roof market as being ultra-high end, there is absolutely no way for the company to claim that its roofing solution will be cheaper than traditional roofs. If Tesla restricts the definition to the high-end roofing market, then the TAM will likely be less than, maybe far less than, 250,000 roofs (5% of 5 million new roofs).
