Subsidizing wages is a terrible idea. It enables employers to pay less, and thus pushes poor people into low paying jobs to get access to the subsidy. The power of BI is that it is agnostic. It is a type of economic freedom, which empowers flexibility and decision-making based upon individual need.

There is no reason why BI needs to be enough to live on.

Here's a wild proposal: put a marginal tax on all income over $1M, regardless of source, then take that money, and divide it evenly among all adults that make less than $25k, bringing their income up to a max of $25k. Who gives a shit if they can't live on it? They sure as hell can use it.
