The idea of the Middle East has become quite vague. In my view, it is tied together by this concept: The Middle East is where perhaps the world’s most complex war is raging, and Middle Eastern countries are those that are involved in this war, one way or another. The war may metastasize into neighboring regions, but this is its heart.

I've read too much stuff on the Middle East and this is as concise and insightful an overview as I've seen. I'm also in no position to dicker with the guy who founded STRATFOR.

This is a good primer. The emphasis was on brevity I think so there are some things I feel could have been fleshed out a bit, but in the interest of keeping it concise, it's good.
