This has been floating around the Linux world for a couple of weeks now. On UEFI systems, the EFI variables get mounted to /sys/firmware/efi/efivars and running 'rm -rf /' can recursively delete them, bricking the motherboard in the process.
Absolutely incredible how far we have come with computing... Just to make even more complex mistakes. Sigh.
