Dr. Bennet Omalu, the renowned neuropathologist who demystified the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), wrote an op-ed in The New York Times on Dec. 7 urging parents not to let their kids play American football. “As we become more intellectually sophisticated and advanced, with greater and broader access to information and knowledge, we have given up old practices in the name of safety and progress,” he wrote. “That is, except when it comes to sports.”
