August 23rd, 1305 – Sir William Wallace was hanged, drawn and quartered after his conviction for high treason against King Edward I of England. A Scottish landowner, Guardian of Scotland, and one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence, he claimed “I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject.” A statue of William Wallace was created in 1888 and stands opposite His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen, Scotland.
