As a redditor of 4 years, I've wanted a new site to frequent for a while. Each time something like this happens, it brings that desire to the foreground.

The default Reddit experience can be draining... simply tiring. The drama, annoying trends, jokes driven into the ground, predictable comments - there's just a pile of petty gripes that eventually make a mark. Sure, you could just subscribe to the smaller subreddits and unsubscribe from the big ones - but that didn't really work for me. I enjoy many aspects of the "/r/all" experience - it's an incredible amount of content streaming in from all directions. Crowds of people to interact with. And for the most part, it's nice - until those little issues rear their ugly heads and start to pile up again.

People tell me that the problems I have with reddit have less to do with reddit, and moreso to do with the internet itself; that any large community on such a site would end up having the same issues, because people are people. Well, I'm not so sure. I'd love a new site to dig into - I think one could do the job - but there aren't many alternatives worth even a mention right now.

Voat is a dissapointing silhouette with less features and (currently) a lot of downtime, understandably so.

Hubski is great, but only as a side visit for me right now - it's missing many aspects a redditor would expect. Not that this is a bad thing. It's just that Hubski's different - it won't be what many redditors are looking for in a replacement site. The lack of individually managed subreddits, differences in upvote philosophy, and the lack of easily digestable image and video content (due to the heavily discussion-based nature of the site) all factor into that.

Many of us just want a change of pace from the monotony. Something fresh, if only for a little while. Personally, I think I'll continue to visit Hubski to satisfy the discussion side. But I'm at a loss for the other side: easily digestable media.
