And today is the 50th anniversary of the recording of A Love Supreme -- yes, Coltrane's quartet did it in one day -- perhaps the greatest jazz album of all time. If you never listen to jazz, make today the one day. Listen to some Miles Davis Quintet, with Davis holding down the trumpet and a relative unknown reinventing the tenor sax. Or listen to anything from Coltrane's own late '50s early '60s output. Can't go wrong.
