Compare: the Cynics, the Platonists after Christianity became dominant, renaissance humanists, 18th century secret societies, beats/hippies/punks/goth/your favorite 20th century subculture. Were they simulating ethnicities as well? I don't think so, and any of them could be described in a very similar way to the description of geeks here.
