Today, Wounded Knee and the Pine Ridge Reservation is one of the poorest places in America. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Shannon County, S.D., which is contained within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is one of only five counties in the United States with poverty rates greater than 39 percent.
