I proposed to my girlfriend last week and officially announced it to the world this morning. And we've been looking at houses. Lots of craziness right now...

There's one reason I'll miss reddit. It's a catchall for communities. For many of the interests I have, the related subreddit is as good or better than any other forum or community that may exist. If I want to find an established community based around some new game or activity I've discovered, my first step is to search for a related subreddit. And most of these subreddits are great; little to no drama, lots of active members, and useful content daily. This isn't a role I can see hubski filling soon or maybe ever.

tehstone  ·  3178 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Even debunked the latest Planned Parenthood hoax will cause great harm.

I hate this shit. It's so easy to manipulate they masses into believing something, why would you bother to gain their support to hard way?

The other day an article was going around claiming that the Seattle school district was forcing 12 year old girls to have IUDs implanted without their parents knowledge or consent. Of course that's bullshit, any rational person can see that but getting the truth out there is a hundred times harder. Furthermore, many of the "news" groups that share this sort of stuff will reference each other as though having a reference lends them credibility. But it's a giant circle jerk of references with no credible source among them.

...said businesswoman Carly Fiorina. “This isn’t about ‘choice.’ It’s about profiting on the death of the unborn while telling women it’s about empowerment.”

Right, cause she is the authority on profiting off at the expense of others.

One of my co-workers got fired last friday so work has been a bit more stressful. And I'm a week out from closing on the house so life in general has been stressful.

But I got in touch with a couple of old friends I hadn't heard from in a while.

Aaaand it's my birthday =)

tehstone  ·  3097 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Elon Musk’s sleight of hand

And one has to imagine that the Model X has much if not all of the hardware necessary that — should a certain over-the-air update arrive at some point

in the future — then the thing will just drive itself around.

Google's self driving cars have a slew of sensors to facilitate driving without a human. Surely the Model X either does or doesn't (hint: it doesn't) and that's an easy thing to figure out for yourself, given access to the vehicle. Software isn't some magic spirit that can turn a normal car into a self driving car.

Other than that, I think the author is probably right. Although he portrays Musk as being more conniving than he perhaps truly is. A lot of companies are moving towards self driving cars and it would be foolish for Tesla to not do the same, especially given their place in many minds as a futuristic car company.

Despite kleinbl00's previous advice, my fiance and I put in an offer for a house on Monday and the sellers accepted it the same day. Didn't have to go 5, 10 or more % above asking, and they're even covering closing costs. Now I get to wait until Friday for the inspection to decide if we really want to go forward with the deal.

This has been one of the best summers of my life. I broke up with my fiance last fall after 5 years together and had a rough 6 months after that figuring myself out as an individual and fighting depression. Started dating again in May and met the most wonderful woman!

Seattle has had the best summer weather I can remember so there have been lots of late evenings and days spent outside.

Besides that I've been working on fitness; running, biking, climbing, swimming. Great stuff.

Party on hubski.

I was hoping this was about the general maturity level of the content and comments on the site. Nope, just talk about monetization.

Objectively I understand the importance of bringing in at least enough revenue to pay for the site (although clearly there are much bigger financial goals in mind with a site like Reddit) but personally, I fucking HATE advertising in all its forms.

You seem to be commenting on every related post with this sort of attitude. Frankly, I hate it. We have plenty of resources to solve problem here while also tackling space exploration. It's a matter of allocation. You and so many other people, at the mention of any space related news can't keep yourselves from criticizing because there's some other problem here we should fix first. I don't buy that argument. This mission cost $1.6 billion. That's literally nothing compared to many many, far less worthy endeavors. Go rain on a different parade.

tehstone  ·  2747 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: DIYski! What have you been up to around the house?

https://imgur.com/a/t12gf

This is one of many house projects the wife and I have done in the past 6 months. Our house is 90+ years old and has been updated in bits and pieces so there's always another project.

The stairs are steep and narrow and were covered with cheap long pile carpet that became very slippery when matted down. We ripped that up and found what seem to be the original stair treads underneath along with remnants of previous carpet. It took 2 hours to pull out the carpet staples by hand with pliers and then several more hours to sand down the treads to remove the paint splatters and other crap covering them. The staining and poly-coating was a long process as well, we did every other stair one weekend and then the landing plus the remaining stairs the next weekend. These are terrible stairs to try and take 2 at a time so that was fun. We ended up with a darker stain color than we had intended to use but that seems to have been a good mistake due to the condition the stairs are in, the darker color masks a lot of the crap underneath.

We went with a very "Pinterest" style project and used a textured wall paper on the rises. Soon after we finished the project we had a bunch of people over to the house and these stairs got a lot of traffic which revealed the choice of material to be a poor choice as the bits of texture fall off. Under normal daily use by two people it's not so bad so we'll hold off on refinishing the rises for now.

tehstone  ·  3153 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Words and their use in USA

Too many people are not smart enough or don't care enough to consider the subtext of what is said. This leads to a country in which the words you use are more important than the meaning behind the words.

For example: Several years back I had a coworker who was verbally abusive. He was a pro at making everyone around him feel insecure and unimportant. But he was very careful with his word choice and complaints to HR were ignored. One day I had had enough of his bullshit and responded to him with, "Oh fuck off." I was written up. Now in the context of the situation, whatever it was that he said to me to trigger such a reaction was worse, and other coworkers of mine would back that up. But to the HR person, my choice of the word "fuck" trumped whatever else was going on in the situation.

Oh, and a good number of people in the US seem to take pleasure in being offended by things. Even when something shouldn't be offensive to them, they will take it as a personal attack.

tehstone  ·  3159 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Quiz: $70,000 minimum wage revisited

It's 5. But your word choices are bad and misleading. The "large shareholder" is the CEO's brother and the lawsuit is based on more than just this decision. Even the parts of it that ARE related to the wage increase are mostly based on the guy's political views, he's essentially trying to punish his brother for doing this. I can sympathize with the employees to an extent but I think it's mostly a symptom of the system we've created around wages where everyone near the bottom is at each others throats while the rich hover above, ever increasing their wealth.

What's more interesting is the role this decision has played in the on going debate in Seattle over wages and wealth equality. The cost of housing in and around the city is increasing so quickly that the extended period of time required to reach full implementation of the $15 minimum wage is going to make the change irrelevant.

tehstone  ·  3109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Seattle may join the super tall skyscraper club

Someone decided at some point that it wasn't important for new developments in Seattle to have much (or any) parking. In some places this ok, the transit is decent and there's a lot of things within walking distance. In other places it's not ok.

Our transit system as a whole is insufficient. While there are plenty of things it does right, there are too many things it does wrong. And there's a consistent problem of getting enough funding. Each time a new ballot measure comes up to add light rail or add bus service, you get a huge outcry of "just build more roads." The problem is, there's no room for more roads. The city is situated on a narrow strip of land between Puget Sound and Lake Washington with the densest parts of the city falling in the narrowest parts. There's also the fact that building more roads or more lanes is incapable of solving the problem. Demand will increase far faster so that by the time the new lanes are complete, there's an even more severe traffic problem.

Then you have an us vs them mentality in the state where it's the rural areas vs the city of Seattle which further complicates funding. And you have an American populace only slightly more willing than the average American to give up on or reduce their use of a personal vehicle.

But back to this building. It's not too far from the city's only light rail line and major bus thoroughfare and not a terrible walk from stores, restaurant, jobs, etc.

tehstone  ·  3532 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, can you quit if you want to?

I did quit mine. I spent 4 months playing Planetside 2 for 8+ hours a day, everyday. My schoolwork suffered, my relationships suffered, my health suffered. Then I just quit. Flat out, one day I didn't do it anymore.

Since then my life has been so much better, I moved back out of my mom's house, made a bunch of new friends, got a girlfriend. None of that would have happened if I hadn't quit. I still think about the game from time to time but it's not worth it.

So since he couldn't stop masturbating, he took a machete to his right arm.

I feel like by his logic, he should have gone after a different appendage.

tehstone  ·  3149 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Beware the Bachelorette! A Report From the Straight Lady Invasion of Gay Bars.

So basically the problem stems from a lack of respect and propriety found in an ever increasing portion of society? No surprise there.

What's not touched on is the other motive for straight women to go to such places: they feel safe from the attention of straight males with no respect for boundaries. Is that ironic?

tehstone  ·  3151 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: It's a White Man's Internet

I don't know if agree with your claim that "leveling the playing field is a zero-sum game" although to many men is might seem that this is the case. There's a reason for this though, check out this and this to read about it.

Essentially, testosterone by nature increases the competitive nature and decreases cooperation. Thus the balancing of power between gender, which should bring about increased cooperation is viewed by those with higher testosterone levels as a threat to their power.

I certainly don't want to excuse anyone's behavior though. Hopefully we've all evolved to the point where we can recognize this kind of biological tendency and think rationally about how to curb the behavior it might otherwise bring about.
