Yup, I got into Radiolab recently and started listening from the start. Good stuff.

syzo  ·  3138 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What’s Behind the Great Podcast Renaissance?

I just started listening to podcasts, around springtime this year. For me it was my goal of walking more. Constantly listening to music while walking was sort of boring, but listening to podcasts while walking is amazing. I've always wanted to listen to podcasts, but now I have a reason to.

Anyone have any suggestions for good podcasts, while we're at it? Maybe there's an old thread around here with some good suggestions?

I don't know why all the metadata is needed, and it's possibly excessive, but this isn't the keylogger the original post claimed.

It could be, if they set up the server on the other end to capture it. But that's still only the stuff you type to the start menu.

My friends and I just play the mods, like castle fight, element td, and legion td. I'd suck haaaaaard at the normal RTS game.

Oh I know dualbooting is an option. I actually go a step further and have two physical computers right next to each other, one running windows and the other linux. I used to run 100% linux before, but switched back to my current setup a little while ago.

Blizzard games (WC3, Hearthstone) and Rocket League are my current holdouts. I haven't tried them in Wine yet, but I bet they'd all work pretty decently.

They're making it pretty alluring to switch to linux full-time. I've done it before but switched back because I missed my games. But...

Very interesting! I haven't thought of doing that before. Now I'm going to have to find some that cater to my music tastes.

Unrelated to that request, but is there an issue tracker for hubski? (github's?)

syzo  ·  3164 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski coding livestream.

I'm actually still interested in <insert lisp language here> for webdev. How easy is it to get started doing Racket webdev? Any recommended readings?

Ooo, a chance to look at some Arc

I think i've missed some news or something. Why should I hate Amazon?

syzo  ·  3167 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Would you use tag alerts?

And even mix the three.

?tag=blah&user=mk&domain=whatever.com

?tag=music&sharedby=syzo&numshares=5+

stuff like that to form your own RSS feed would be awesome.

syzo  ·  3167 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Would you use tag alerts?

You can use a reader to aggregate a bunch of different RSS feeds together. It also keeps track of what you've read and not read. I use Tiny Tiny RSS, but there's also this, this, this, this, and more. I've been toying with the idea of making my own, too.

I aggregate together a bunch of feeds from reddit, youtube, podcasts, webcomics, and blogs, and it keeps track of what I've read and not read (I'm actually super backlogged right now). Now that I've learned that hubski supports it, I'll probably add some feeds from here as well.

syzo  ·  3167 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Would you use tag alerts?

Oh! I actually was unaware that Hubski already supported RSS. RSS is the perfect solution for that, and there's already tools you can use to get email from RSS. That having been said, I'd support having an email notification if you decide that it's not too much more added complexity, but I probably wouldn't use it (I use an RSS reader anyway).

syzo  ·  3167 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Would you use tag alerts?

RSS.

I'm extremely surprised that ubuntu didnt work, especially for something as generic as a logitech keyboard.

I hate pages that have the full-page header. I sat there watching the animation for a good ten seconds waiting for it to do something, then noticed the scrollbar and scrolled down.

>:(

syzo  ·  3185 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So... switching to Linux.

I just recently (past few months) felt comfortable enough to switch to Arch after years of -buntu use. I'd totally use Mint for a year or two, then try a rolling release out.

Usually the distro upgrades went pretty smoothly for me in ubuntu, though.

syzo  ·  3185 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So... switching to Linux.

I highly recommend a -buntu variant of your choice (xubuntu is my favorite) if you're just starting out with linux. It's much easier to google "ubuntu <problem>" and get an answer that works, because ubuntu is definitely the most-used distro. Linux mint is based on Ubuntu so you're probably fine there too.

There's definitely a learning curve with Linux but after you've become familiar with linux you start to feel like you have much more control over your computer than you would on windows. I've come to absolutely love the command line, ssh, and others - it's just so convenient.

I highly suggest dual booting with windows as well, just try to use linux as much as possible and see if you can do everything you need to. Remember there's things like Wine that work for lots of programs and even old games. I don't know which old games you had that didnt work, but Wine's improved a decent amount since pre-Unity. I'd try those again, but yeah those games still might not work.

Edit: also, hardware support is SOO much better nowadays than it was in the pre-unity days, i think you'll find your hardware works a lot better out of the box now.

This site has the article waaay the fuck over on the right side of my screen. Why.

syzo  ·  3190 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Will you be upgrading to Windows 10 on Wednesday?

I'm upgrading on my surface. For my laptop, I don't trust Microsoft to have my windows+linux dual boot intact.

I'm keeping windows 7 on my gaming PC. And my linux box won't be touched by windows.

I'll probably mess around with windows 10 on my raspberry pi.

Yes, I have a lot of PCs.

syzo  ·  3190 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 133rd Weekly "Share Some Music You've Been Into Lately" Thread

I've been really into a lofi (and normal) hip hop kick since pretty much February. The dang artists keep deleting their songs from soundcloud, though, so I can't seem to find a lot of the old songs I liked. =/

Oh god the soundcloud embeds are huge
